Description:
Forging the Darksword - Outlawed by the mage-priests of Thimhallen since the Iron Wars, the Ninth Mystery, called Technology, has survived only among society's outcasts until a young man born without magic and a priest who is a catalyst of magical energy form an alliance that shakes their complacent and stagnant world. The authors of the "Dragonlance" series again demonstrate their talent for vivid world-crafting and strong characterization in a novel that will appeal to fans of epic fantasy. Doom of the Darksword - Born without magic, Joram was one of the Dead, denied the throne of Merilon. For years, he lived among outlaws, surviving by wit and sleight-of-hand. Now, wielding the powerful, magic absorbing Darksword, Joram returns to the enchanted Kingdom that once was his home to win revenge and claim his birthright. Here he will test Bishop Vanya and his fierce army of Duuk-tsarith in a battle unlike any their world has known. Joined by the scholarly catalyst Saryon, the young mage Mosiah, and the trickster Simkin, Jorma confronts the shattering secret of his past and discovers the ancient prophecy that puts the fate of the world in his hands-the hands that forged The Darksword. Triumph of the Darksword - Joram and his wife, Gwendolyn, return from beyond the Border to reclaim their rightful place in Merilon. Rejoined by Saryon, Mosiah and Simkin, Joram must confront the evil sorcerer, Menju, and his army of Technologists in a final apocalyptic battle to fulfill the ancient prophecy of the Darksword--to either save the world. Legacy of the Darksword - Weis and Hickman return to the world of the "Darksword" trilogy in this heroic fantasy, which measures up to its predecessors. After the fall of Thimhallan, its people migrated to Earth. Bereft of magic, the evil Technomancers on Earth wanted and feared the new darksword. Believing that it could help defeat the alien invading Hch'nyv, King Garald and General Boris try to convince Saryon to go back to Thimhallan to retrieve the sword.

Description:
Review "This landmark book takes us on an unforgettable journey across disciplines, countries, spiritualities, and techniques to teach us twenty-first century psychologies of liberation. Authors Watkins and Shulman transform the discipline of psychology, showing us its connections to all disciplines concerned with liberating the imagination. Across international fields of difference, these authors never give up the prize: social and psychic emancipation. In doing so, they define what 'decoloniality' means for the twenty-first century." --Chela Sandoval, Associate Professor of Liberation Philosophy, Chair, Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. "A scholarly, heartfelt, and desperately needed re-visioning of psychology." --Dr Craig Chalquist, JFK University, USAВ В  "One cannot help but recommend this text with utmost enthusiasm. Although not by any means a summary of its plural subject, Toward Psychologies of Liberation can be read as multi-layered digest of the major psychological, philosophical, and theological roots of this movement, as well as a review of some of the major problems tackled by theorists and practitioners within the tradition. Watkins& Shulman have crafted for us a major tour de force, broad in scope and encyclopedic in nature." --Journal of Religion and HealthВ В  "Toward Psychologies of Liberation' provides us with a brilliant and timely compilation, in the mode of an appreciative evaluation, of these diverse strands that might be woven into the fabric of critical and progressive social science...This is a path-breaking book, and an enormous service to our scholarly community in the extensiveness and sophistication of its coverage...It isВ a remarkable work which deserves widespread attention." --Barnaby B. Barratt, Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society About the Author MARY WATKINS is a core faculty and coordinator of Community and Ecological Fieldwork and Research in the MA/PhD Depth Psychology Program at Pacifica Graduate Institute, Santa Barbara, USA. She is a clinical and development psychologist who has worked both in a wide variety of clinical settings and with groups on issues of peace, diversity, social justice, and the envisioning of community and cultural transformation. She is the author of Waking Dreams, Invisible Guests: The Development of Imaginal Dialogues, co-author of Talking with Young Children about Adoption, and essays on the confluence of depth and liberation psychologies.В HELENE SHULMAN has taught cultural studies, critical race theory, and depth psychologies at several universities in the United States including Sonoma State, St. Lawrence University, and Pacifica Graduate Institute, She is a community activist, Jungian analyst, and workshop leader in liberation arts and psychologies. She has written several articles and book chapters on these subjects, and a monograph, Living at the Edge of Chaos: Complex Systems in Culture and Psyche.

Description:
From Publishers Weekly What does an analysis of PW's and USA Today's bestsellers lists tell us about the values, desires and fears of the American reading public? [R]eaders are increasingly attracted to simple, univocal reinforcements of hunches rather than complex... answers, say the authors. Heath (coauthor, Who Killed Homer?) and first-time author Adams go on to analyze book after book to show its superficiality and failure to challenge readers' assumptions; they pick in particular on Dan Brown. The low-carb craze was about simplistic answers to psychological and physiological issues. J.K. Rowling and John Grisham reduce the world to good vs. evil, eliminating the need to understand conflicting points of view; Laura Schlessinger's and John Gray's success reveal an American public longing for traditional male-female roles. Disaster books, even literary titles like Into Thin Air, demonstrate an American appetite for redemptive stories of survival in the face of tragedy, and the red-hot Da Vinci Code scored by manipulating our lust for controversy and conspiracy and our need to feel (without actually being) educated. This effort is larded with data that will be obvious to publishing professionals and of little interest to general readers. (Sept.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From the Back Cover What do weight loss, evil emperors and tales of redemption have in common? We readers have many dirty little secrets-and our bestselling books are spilling them all. We can’t resist conspiratorial crooks or the number 7. We have bought millions of books about cheese. And over a million of us read more than 50 nearly identical books every single year.In Why We Read What We Read, Lisa Adams and John Heath take an insightful and often hilarious tour through nearly 200 bestselling books, ferreting out their persistent themes and determining what those say about what we believe and how we relate to one another. Some of our favorite (and revealing) topics include:* Repeating the Obvious: Diet, Wealth, and Inspiration* Black and White and Read All Over: Good and Evil in Bestselling Adventure Novels and Political Nonfiction * Soul Train: Religion and Spirituality* Hopefully Ever After: Love, Romance and Relationships* Reading for Redemption: Trials and Triumphs in Literary Fiction and Nonfiction* Controversy and Conspiracy in The Da Vinci Code Explore the nature of what and how we read-and what it means for our psyches, our society and our future.

Description:
Review "This is a fascinating study offering a different perspective on warfare in the late Roman empire … . Extremely user-friendly and contains a wealth of useful sources and resources." (Journal of Classics Teaching, Autumn 2008) “A very useful contribution to the study of Roman military … precise organization and ample references will make it easy to return to the book again and again.” (Bryn Mawr Classical Review) “Lee provides a detailed analysis … .An excellent scholar, [he] cleverly exploits the ancient historians … .His writing style is lucid …. .Recommended.” (Choice) Review "War in Late Antiquity is well informed, gives an excellent idea of what the sources are for the subject and treats many technical issues in a balanced and intelligent way. This is a book that anyone can read with profit."–David S. Potter, University of Michigan “Lee provides an authoritative and clear account of the social, economic and cultural structures which underpinned the army in the late Roman state, backed by an impressive range of evidence. The Roman empire may have fallen apart, but not without a long struggle and Lee well explains how its armies now fought under the protection of Christianity, that most militant of ancient religions, to preserve the state and its civilised elite.”–Michael Whitby, University of Warwick

Description:
Amazon.com Review By definition, the notion of the dialectic--that powerful philosophical tool for understanding the constant ebb and flow of argument, history, and reality itself--is hard to pin down. And so is The Digital Dialectic: New Essays on New Media, a smart collection of mostly academic essays, which aims to identify a dialectic at the heart of the digital technologies currently reshaping the way we see and know the world. Just what that dialectic might be varies from contributor to contributor--as does the quality of the essays, which originated as presentations at a 1995 conference--but Lunenfeld's elegant running commentary does a nice job of teasing out their common concerns. Grouped in sections with headings like "The Real and the Ideal," "The Body and the Machine," and "The Medium and the Message," such sharp-eyed commentators as philosopher Michael Heim, literary critic N. Katherine Hayles, and new-media auteur Florian Brody grapple with the complicated give and take implied in those opposing terms. They use it to elucidate the pros and cons of cybernetics, Net porn, Neo-Luddism, hypertext, and a host of other ripe cybercultural phenomena. The parts of this book don't necessarily add up to a coherent sum, but their shared commitment to living with the dialectic--i.e., to eschewing the one-sidedness of both utopian and dystopian visions of the digital--sets an invaluable tone. --Julian Dibbell --This text refers to the edition. From Library Journal Touted as an interdisciplinary jam session about our visual and intellectual cultures as the computer continues to pervade almost every moment of our lives, this book delivers in grand, thought-provoking style. Edited by Lunenfeld (communication and new media design, Art Center Coll. of Design), the volume offers a cornucopia of essays by almost a dozen contributors (including Lunenfeld himself), who draw inspiration from the 1995 Conference on the Convergence of Technology, Media, and Theory. None of the material seems dated (four years can be eons when considering technology), and a clear favorite has to be Brenda Laurels wry, memoir-like discourse on technology and entertainment, Musings on Amusements in America, or What I Did on My Summer Vacation. Other offerings include William J. Mitchells Replacing Place and George P. Landows Hypertext as Collage Writing. This effort in toto is an entertaining, unqualified success. Recommended for all collections.Geoff Rotunno, Valley Voice Newspaper, Goleta, CACopyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the edition.

Description:
This is the first of three volumes on algebraic geometry. The second volume, Algebraic Geometry 2: Sheaves and Cohomology, is available from the AMS as Volume 197 in the Translations of Mathematical Monographs series. Early in the 20th century, algebraic geometry underwent a significant overhaul, as mathematicians, notably Zariski, introduced a much stronger emphasis on algebra and rigor into the subject. This was followed by another fundamental change in the 1960s with Grothendieck's introduction of schemes. Today, most algebraic geometers are well-versed in the language of schemes, but many newcomers are still initially hesitant about them. Ueno's book provides an inviting introduction to the theory, which should overcome any such impediment to learning this rich subject. The book begins with a description of the standard theory of algebraic varieties. Then, sheaves are introduced and studied, using as few prerequisites as possible. Once sheaf theory has been well understood, the next step is to see that an affine scheme can be defined in terms of a sheaf over the prime spectrum of a ring. By studying algebraic varieties over a field, Ueno demonstrates how the notion of schemes is necessary in algebraic geometry. This first volume gives a definition of schemes and describes some of their elementary properties. It is then possible, with only a little additional work, to discover their usefulness. Further properties of schemes will be discussed in the second volume.

As Jeffrey Gitterman reveals, when it comes to success and happiness, we often find more exhilaration in pursuing our goals than in attaining them. So what does this mean for those of us who strive for fulfillment? We can't just stop trying, can we? Is there any way to truly feel fulfilled? Beyond Success presents simple principles to help us:             • redirect our efforts toward what we want to express in the world, rather than what we want to get or how we want to feel • experience ongoing peace while still working toward our material goals • map a plan for the future which embraces a continually evolving life story • derive personal satisfaction through our affect on others This book provides a down-to-earth process for finding peace and contentment within the real world...all the while redefining the meaning of success. From Publishers Weekly A struggling journalist covering the L.A. party circuit ponders her price while writing a feature about a high-class hooker in David's misfired follow-up to Party Girl. Emma Swanson, hungry for a promotion at Substance—a local glam rag—is young, ambitious and frustrated with her lowly beat. While researching a potential cover story on yuppie hooking, she meets gorgeous if bitchy call girl Jessica Davis, who introduces Emma to her contemporary version of the world's oldest profession. As Emma's story looks like it might come together (and Jessica showers Emma with expensive gifts), one of Jessica's friends offers Emma the editor-in-chief spot at a magazine he's about to launch. The catch: she's got to give him the hooker story. What follows is a moralizing journey of self-discovery, replete with a Michael Toms–assisted epiphany. David sets up some interesting parallels between selling your soul and selling your body, but the narrative comes off too lightweight and hokily insidery (Ron Burkle is name-checked) to really deliver on them. From Emma Swanson is a frustrated Los Angeles writer working as a party reporter for Substance magazine, which means she lines up outside red-carpet events and tries to get celebrities to give her quotes. She spots an exotic woman at various events and soon learns that Jessica is a professional escort who gets paid in clothes, jewelry, and rent payments. Fascinated by this career choice, and curious about what would make a woman become a professional escort, Emma thinks this would be a spectacular story for Substance. When her pitch is accepted, Emma works on ingratiating herself with Jessica. Jessica is more than willing to help Emma with her story and they become friends as Jessica tells Emma about the escort business and Emma learns how to be bolder and get what she wants. But Jessica won’t do anything without getting something in return, and Emma has to decide exactly how much she’s willing to do for a story and a friendship. David presents a glitzy, glamorous, gossipy novel. --Hilary Hatton
